Cinnamon and Sap
Sarah Marie Espenschied
I’d grow a forest for you,
Build a home for us
Inside a tree the perfect size for you and me,
It would smell of cinnamon and sap,
cedar, smoke, and pine,
lavender and rain,
and the faintness of a peeled and shared orange,
And every night we would welcome sleep,
Tired eyes and warm mugs of tea,
We would brush our teeth together
in our shared little sink,
We would say goodnight to the moon,
to each other too,
And every morning we would wake
with the sun’s whispered greeting,
and the song birds waking call,
we would spend an eternity
in our lovely little bed,
And whisper the first words of the day
over coffee we made together,
watching the squirrels and the birds wake
and start their days,
And every breath I breathe is laced with my love for you.
